1. Anime Series Breakdown

  • Kanto (Indigo League & Orange Islands)Pokémon: Indigo League (Season 1) comprises 82 episodes (Japan)​; it aired on TV Tokyo Apr 1997–Jan 1999 and in the US first-run Sept–Nov 1998​. Ash travels with Pikachu, Misty and Brock. Produced by OLM (Oriental Light and Magic) and directed by Masamitsu Hidaka​.   1. Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back (JP: Mewtwo’s Counterattack, ミュウツーの逆襲) – Japan July 18, 1998; US Nov 12, 1999​. Plot: Ash and friends are lured to New Island where they confront Mewtwo, a powerful clone Pokémon. Mewtwo plans to clone all Pokémon and destroy the human world.   2. Pokémon the Movie 2000 – The Power of One (JP: 幻のポケモン ルギア爆誕, Mirage Pokémon: Lugia’s Explosive Birth) – Japan July 17, 1999; US July 21, 2000​. Plot: On Shamouti Island, Ash helps an illusory Chosen One bring peace when the three Legendary birds (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres) are set to battle due to the Collector’s meddling.   3. Pokémon 3: Spell of the Unown – Entei (JP: 結晶塔の帝王 ENTEI, Emperor of the Crystal Tower) – Japan July 8, 2000; US April 6, 2001​. Plot: In Greenfield, young Molly brings Unown into the real world via magic tiles. Her wish summons Entei (a Legendary) to find her “mother,” inadvertently kidnapping Ash’s mom.   4. Pokémon 4Ever – Celebi: The Voice of the Forest (JP: セレビィ時を超えた遭遇, Celebi: Encounter Beyond Time) – Japan July 7, 2001; US Oct 11, 2002​. Plot: A boy from 40 years ago finds mythical Celebi and is sent to the present. His encounter leads to the villain Iron-Masked Marauder capturing Celebi using Dark Balls.   5. Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias (JP: 水の都の護神 ラティアスとラティオス, Guardian Gods of the City of Water) – Japan July 13, 2002; US May 16, 2003​. Plot: In the ocean city Alto Mare (based on Venice), Ash and friends are guided by the guardian Pokémon Latias and Latios. Team Rocket thieves Annie & Oakley steal the Soul Dew (sacred treasure). Ash and his friends race to restore the Soul Dew and save Alto Mare. Legendary: Latias and Latios​
  6. Pokémon: Jirachi – Wish Maker (JP: 七夜の願い星 ジラーチ, Wishing Star of the Seven Nights) – Japan July 19, 2003; US June 1, 2004​. Plot: Every thousand years, Jirachi awakens. Ash’s team protects the star-shaped Mythical Pokémon Jirachi from Team Magma’s Butler, who seeks to misuse Jirachi’s wish-granting power to create Groudon.   7. Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys (JP: 裂空の訪問者 デオキシス, Sky-Splitting Visitor: Deoxys) – Japan July 17, 2004; US Jan 22, 2005​ Plot: A meteor carrying Pokémon Deoxys crashes on Earth. Four years later, Deoxys attacks a city. Ash encounters Deoxys and also appears Rayquaza (who first confronted it). Ash and friends uncover the connection between the meteor, Deoxys and Rayquaza, and work to resolve their conflict. Legendary: Deoxys (and Rayquaza)​.
  8. Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (JP: ミュウと波導の勇者 ルカリオ, Mew and the Wave Hero) – Japan July 16, 2005; US Sept 19, 2006​ Plot: Ash’s Pikachu is teleported to the past Tree of Beginning. Ash teams up with a time-traveling Lucario, sealed away long ago, to rescue Pikachu. They unravel the history of the Pokémon hero who sealed Lucario.   9. Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (JP: ポケモンレンジャーと蒼海の王子 マナフィ, Pokémon Ranger and the Prince of the Sea) – Japan July 15, 2006; US Mar 23, 2007​ Plot: May cares for a Manaphy egg (Mythical Pokémon) given by a Pokémon Ranger. The Phantom thieves kidnap the egg to resurrect a sunken ancient city. Ash, May and Brock journey across the ocean to protect Manaphy and stop the Phantom. Mythical: Manaphy​.
  10. Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai (JP: ディアルガVSパルキアVSダークライ, Dialga vs Palkia vs Darkrai) – Japan July 14, 2007; US Feb 24, 2008​ Plot: In Alamos Town (site of a shrine to the Legendary Dialga and Palkia), a spatiotemporal disturbance traps the town. A local Darkrai tries to help the town’s mayor but is blamed for the chaos. Ash must save the town and clear Darkrai’s name as Dialga and Palkia’s battle erupts.   11. Pokémon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior (JP: ギラティナと氷空の花束 シェイミ, Giratina and the Sky’s Bouquet: Shaymin) – Japan July 19, 2008; US Feb 13, 2009​. Plot: Poisonous clouds appear in the Reverse World (home of Giratina). Giratina pursues Dialga to avenge perceived wrongs and inadvertently blames Shaymin. A researcher also seeks Giratina’s power. Ash must stop the fighting between Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, and guide Shaymin to safety. Legendary: Giratina and Shaymin​.
  12. Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (JP: アルセウス 超克の時空へ, Arceus: To a Conquering Spacetime) – Japan July 18, 2009; US Nov 20, 2009​. Plot: Ash and friends arrive in Michina Town, a place of legends. Dialga and Giratina resume their battle; local guardian Sheena stops them. The conflict is revealed to be instigated by Arceus (creator of the universe) seeking vengeance for the betrayal of Sheena’s ancestor. Ash and allies travel back in time to restore history and prevent Arceus’s wrath. Legendary: Arceus (and Dialga, Palkia, Giratina)​.
  13. Pokémon: Zoroark: Master of Illusions (JP: 幻影の覇者ゾロアーク, Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark) – Japan July 10, 2010; US Feb 5, 2011​. Plot: Ash and friends visit Crown City during a Pokémon Battle World Cup. Three Legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune (revealed as illusions controlled by Zoroark) rampage in the city. Zoroark’s child, Zorua, asks Ash’s help to free its mother from the villain Grings Kodai. They must stop Kodai and the illusory disasters. Plot: Young Keldeo trains to become a Sacred Swordsman (with Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion) but is wounded by Kyurem. Keldeo escapes into Ash’s path.   16. Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened (JP: 神速のゲノセクト ミュウツー覚醒, Extreme Speed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens) – Japan July 13, 2013; US Oct 19, 2013​. Plot: An army of prehistoric Genesect (enhanced by Team Plasma’s Red DNA) attacks New Tork City. Ash encounters Mewtwo, who empathizes with the Genesect. Plot: In Kalos, Ash and friends help Diancie (princess of a subterranean diamond domain). Diancie seeks Xerneas to renew her Heart Diamond. On the journey, jewel thieves awaken Yveltal (destroyer). Plot: A retelling of Ash’s early days: On his 10th birthday, a disobedient Pikachu is assigned to him. Ash and Pikachu search for Ho-Oh after receiving a Rainbow Wing; along the way, Ash befriends classmates Sorrel and Verity.
