Full Movie Plot Summary (In-Depth, Original Retelling)
A Dream of Adventure
Nobita, ever the daydreamer, becomes obsessed with Treasure Island after reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic. Frustrated that all of Earth’s lands are already mapped, he begs Doraemon to help him discover an uncharted island. The robotic cat reluctantly pulls out a Treasure Map Gadget, which mysteriously points to a real, unknown island recently reported in the news.
Setting Sail
With Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo tagging along, Doraemon constructs a miniature pirate ship (enlarged via another gadget), and the group embarks on a high-seas journey. However, their excitement turns to terror when a gang of pirates attacks their vessel. In the chaos, Shizuka is kidnapped, and the island itself begins moving—revealing itself as a massive futuristic ship disguised as land.
The Truth Unfolds
The crew rescues Flock, a boy who escaped the pirate ship. He reveals that the pirates are time travelers led by Captain Silver, a man driven mad by grief after his wife’s death. Silver’s crew loots treasures from across history, but his true plan is far darker: he wants to drain Earth’s energy to power his ship’s voyage to a new planet, dooming humanity.
The Rescue Mission
Nobita’s group tracks the pirates, discovering that Shizuka was mistaken for Sarah, Silver’s daughter (who looks identical to her). A failed rescue leads to Sarah joining Nobita, while Shizuka remains captive. The heroes learn Silver’s tragic backstory—his obsession with treasure stems from a promise to his late wife.
Final Battle for Earth
In a climactic showdown:
- Gian and Suneo distract the pirates.
- Nobita and Doraemon sabotage the ship’s energy-draining engine.
- Flock and Sarah confront their father, making him realize his love for them outweighs his greed.
Silver aborts his plan, returning the stolen energy to Earth. The pirates vanish into their own time, and Nobita gains a newfound appreciation for his own father.

Behind-the-Scenes & Trivia
- First Doraemon film to cross ¥5 billion in Japan.
- Inspired by Treasure Planet (Disney’s sci-fi adaptation of Treasure Island), particularly in its futuristic pirate ship design.
- Shizuka’s brown hair was a callback to her 1979 anime design.
- Last Doraemon movie released theatrically in South Korea.
Why This Film Stands Out
Unlike typical Doraemon adventures, Nobita’s Treasure Island blends high-stakes sci-fi, emotional family drama, and swashbuckling action. Captain Silver’s tragic villainy and the themes of parental love vs. obsession elevate it beyond a simple kids’ film. Its record-breaking box office proves its universal appeal.
