anime Series Versions

  • 1973 Original Series: The first Doraemon anime aired on Nippon TV from April 1 to Sept. 30, 1973 (26 episodes, 52 shorts). Produced by Nippon TeleMovie (a Nippon TV subsidiary), it adapted many manga stories but suffered studio financial troubles and management changes. The studio went bankrupt, and by 1981 the publisher ordered reruns stopped to avoid confusion with the new series. Only a few episodes survive today.
  • 1979–2005 Ōyama Series: The second TV adaptation ran Apr 2, 1979 – Mar 18, 2005. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation (with Asatsu DK, TV Asahi), it lasted 26 seasons with 1,787 episodes plus 30 specials. This color series (often called the “Ōyama Edition” after Doraemon’s voice actress Nobuyo Ōyama) had higher production values and fully realized the manga’s vision. It became the longest-running of the three and was widely syndicated (in 60+ countries). The 1979 series introduced new opening themes (“Doraemon no Uta”), updated character designs, and consistent characterization. It concluded in March 2005 with “Nobita’s Windmaster Adventure”.
  • 2005–Present Reboot: The third Doraemon anime premiered on April 15, 2005 and is still ongoing. Co-produced by Shin-Ei, TV Asahi and ADK Emotions, it has aired 837+ episodes (through 2022). This reboot features modernized animation and character designs, digital coloring, and new voice actors (notably Wasabi Mizuta as Doraemon, hence “Mizuta Edition”). The reboot often remakes classic stories with updated gags. It continues to release weekly episodes and annual spring films. Two official English dubs have been made (Viz Media’s 2014–15 U.S. run and LUK Internacional’s Europe dub).
